Nonius was present at the Hotel Technology Next Generation (HTNG)
Fourth Annual European Members' Meeting & Conference, between 19th
and 21st of October, at the Lisbon Marriott Hotel in Lisbon.
In this event, Nonius presented the products that develops for the
hospitality market, WGServer and NiVo, and participated in conferences
and meetings, generating and sharing knowledge about the latest
technology for the hospitality market.
HTNG is a global trade association that fosters, through
collaboration and partnership among hoteliers and technology providers,
the development of next-generation solutions that will enable them to do
business globally in the 21st century.

Nonius
and Anevia became partners
|
Alcadis is Nonius’ Official VAD
for the Benelux market
|

Nonius established a partnership with Anevia, a leading provider
of VoD (Video on Demand) and IPTV (Internet Protocol Television)
solutions, in order to integrate equipments from Anevia in the NiVo solution,
the Nonius’ advanced entertainment system - a state of the art in-room
entertainment solution.
Based on this agreement, Anevia will make available the latest
APIs and software releases. Anevia will also supply Nonius the VoD
servers, IPTV gateways and streamers, whose functions are to receive and
convert the TV and radio analog or digital broadcast into IPTV format,
injecting it in the hotel, hospital, or any other IP network.

Nonius and Alcadis met each other at CeBIT in Hannover. At that
time, Alcadis’ previous Internet Access controller and captive portal
vendor, IP3, had gone out of business.
Alcadis was looking for a partner to replace IP3 and Nonius had
pleasantly impressed Alcadis with what is known as a very competitive and
state of the art controller – the WGServer.
Based in the Netherlands, Alcadis is now the official distributor
of Nonius’ products for the Benelux market. ■

What is the main activity of Alcadis?
Alcadis is a technical oriented VAD with special
expertise in networking and security solutions.
How did you come to know Nonius?
We ran into the Nonius booth at the Cebit. At that point in time our
previous captive portal vendor IP3 had gone out of business. We we're
pleasantly surprised by the live demo at the booth. We had been searching
for a while but hadn't quite found what we were looking for. The demo at
the Cebit left little room for doubt.
What were the key factors that made you become Nonius’ VAD?
We've had some years of experience with several brands of portals
and we had been searching for a replacement product for while. The
solution that Nonius presented fitted most of our businesscases. It had
some interesting features that I had not seen before and unlike most
portals it scales up to 1000's of simultaneous users. Also the flexibility and in-house custom development
options are very welcome in this industry.

What is the feedback of your customers on Nonius´ products?
Our customers are happy to find what they had been searching for.
Besides the standard solutions it also meets the requirements of high level
custom integration projects. This way it serves both the easy to integrate
standard solutions as well as the Enterprise complex projects.
What do you think differentiates
Nonius´ Internet Access Appliance from the others competitors’ gateways?
Nonius Gateways are by far the most
flexible solution on the market. All features that have been
developed for large scale enterprise deployments can also be used in
smaller venues at reasonable costs. Customers in the EU can also benefit
from the fact that Nonius is a Portugese based company. This makes
communication within the same time zone possible. We have dealt with many Asian and US based
firms where this has been a major issue. The development team
at Nonius are definitely in touch with the EU market. Most
features that are in the products have been developed market driven and
requests for new features has a low barrier to development and a fast
implementation. With Nonius you’re sure to get what is required! ■

Why did you choose a company like
Nonius to start your career?
At final stage of my university
studies, I was awarded a research grant to work at the university’s
Autonomous Systems Laboratory in a project that was developed in
partnership with Nonius. The project was the WG-WPS and I worked on its
first phase which allowed me to be involved with the company from its early
beginnings. Since the beginning, Nonius had a great impact on the
Portuguese market due to innovative
and unique features from its products. My career development at Nonius was
built with the several projects that Nonius has developed and in which I
have been involved.
During these 4 years, you were involved in many innovative projects.
Tell us about them.
From the beginning, I was involved
in the WG-WPS development, which is a system that allows exploiting an
existing Wi-Fi network to offer real-time location services. Then, new
projects emerged that fitted my profile. I highlight the WGStargate
project, a communication solution fully integrated for cruise boats and the
WirelessGEST project, which originated the WGServer and its management and
internet access control software. At the moment I dedicate a lot of my time
to developing new features for the WGServer. I am also a member of the
ReCoop project team, a partnership with INESC Porto, for R&D in the
area of wireless cooperative
networks.

What attracted you the most in developing these projects?
One of the most important and
exciting key factor is the technology used in Nonius’ products. It’s good
to see that the products that we develop are not to be shelved somewhere,
are always applied in real situations with high levels of customer
satisfaction. The technology it is used still provides me with permanent challenges
and the opportunity to acquire
knowledge and skills which are essential for my career progression
as Software Engineer.
What are the technologies that you
like most to work with?
I think that all the technologies
and products developed by Nonius are motivating during its development and
in the implementation stage. I don’t give preference to any of them,
because there’s a wide range of them in Nonius’ products (Wireless,
Satellite Communications, IP, ...).
Knowing the whole process of Nonius’
products development, how do you explain the acceptance and success of
those by the market?
Nonius’ products success and acceptance by the market are due mainly
to the fact that we present solutions that can be easily customized, the
presentation of technologically advanced products in the telecom sector and
the commitment we show to the clients. Not to forget the team spirit
existing at Nonius where all departments (R&D, Operations, Sales, ...)
work together with a common goal and drive for success. ■

Holiday Inn Express Lisbon Airport is the second hotel of this chain,
to acquire Nonius solutions for the Internet access control, management and
distribution. The solution implemented at this hotel includes modules to
print tickets with username and password, the integration with the Hotel
Front Office (Fidelio) and allows the traceability of the user’s sessions,
in accordance with the Law Decree 32/2008.

Business Solutions, a Rumos Professional Services’
Business Unit, holds all the know-how of a company strongly established in
the IT market. This company has recently become an integrator of Nonius’
solutions.

Instalação e Manutenção de Sistemas Informáticos, Lda. is a company
specialized in the design and installation of computer systems, which now
provides its customers with Nonius’ products.

Teleonda is a telecommunications company based in Faro, which specializes in
consulting, installation and maintenance of telecommunications equipment
and infrastructure for Residential, Business and, in particular the Hospitality
Industry.
Nonius is well represented, at the Algarve, by this one more
partner.

Impala Network Solutions offers its customers value-added
communications solutions.
This company, based in Barcelona, has become Nonius’ partner and is
implementing Nonius’ solutions at their customers with great success.
